Thoughts on Food

I believe in the mind-body connection and view food as something to be enjoyed and something to serve you well…along with a bowl of ice cream now and then too.

If you choose to view these posts relating to nutrition, realize these are my opinions and my own research.  Nothing is intended to be used as medical advice, please see your doctor if you have a health issue.  I am an enthusiast and someone who has been researching the science of food and a variety of healthy habits.

As I mentioned in the About me page I am technically a lacto-ovo-pesca-vegetarian.  Easier to say mostly vegetarian but I want to be accurate.  I am also gluten free and have been since 2008.  With those two somewhat unordinary eating habits I have found ways to add a variety of options to my meals, share them with others and once again fill my plate at Thanksgiving.  I will mention I have a couple of family members that I am so thankful for as they provide alternatives to what the rest of the family may be eating at gatherings.  They are attuned and generous in the selection of vegetarian and gluten free friendly options for me during family meals.  My family is also open to eating things I bring to gatherings and wouldn’t have thought they are gluten free!

I have also researched food as medicine.  Has anyone heard about the health benefit of drinking Apple Cider Vinegar?  It has to be the type with the “mother” or it’s a filtered product which doesn’t qualify  for this purpose.  I know it sounds odd but I believe in it.  It’s a matter of choice and isn’t right for everyone.  It is an acquired taste to say the least.  The idea is that the apple cider vinegar acts to alkaline the body.  It is thought that an acidic body is pretty common and can lead to ailments.  I recommend you research this for yourself and make your own informed opinion as I’m not saying you should or shouldn’t do it.  I mix an ounce or so into a glass of water and sip it throughout an afternoon or evening.  You will smell a little like it so I don’t do it at work.  You’re welcome coworkers!

I have also increased my consumption of tomato based products in the summer to avoid sunburn.  However the research shows you have to eat nearly a half cup of tomato paste a day for three months to get any protection.  It’s the lycopene in them…it is what makes them red and it offers a low to moderate level of SPF.  I would stick with a sunscreen.

If this topic interests you then stay tuned I have lots to tell you!

Oh and one other thing.  Throughout these posts, I will not use the word diet…unless I’m explaining that in a post.  I will use the words, a way of eating.  I don’t like the word diet because I think people associate it with restrictions.  You can still have your sweets and what not but in moderation.  I’ll go into my thoughts on this another time.

One quick tip…drink more water.  Easy.  Inexpensive.  Benefits are numerous.  Go get a glass!
